Here is the story of the U.S. Marine Dan Daly who performed so valiantly in combat at the turn of the 20th Century he earned two Congressional Medals of Honor and was nominated for a third for his actions in World War I. The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest military award available in the United States. He wasn't awarded the third for his actions in World War I as he already had two and it was thought that it was unseemly to give him a third. Despite having clearly earned a third Medal of Honor, he was instead awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Service Cross, the highest medal available for Naval personnel and the second highest medal available to US Military personnel. U.S. Marine Corp legend is the Daly actually turned down the third Medal of Honor himself. Dan Daly's name is revered among all U.S Marines as a shining example of what it means to be a U.S. Marine.
